From Field to Finished Fiber" is a very informative 2 hour seminar offered on April 27th. We feel this is the first of its kind. This seminar is compiled from many hours of experience by knowledgeable people interested in helping all fiber livestock breeders get the most benefit out of their herd.
Bruce MacLean of Highland Shearing out of Oroville, WA and our mill, Going to the Sun Fiber Mill, Kalispell, MT, are joining together as a team in presenting this seminar. We will be going from the shearing point all the way to the finished yarn and how to market it. We will have samples of alpaca fiber, some good and some poor, to show that fiber preparation begins with pasture/weed management and ends with proper skirting before going to the mill. Also other types of fiber, various wool types, angora bunny, mohair, bison, yak, qiviut...etc will be shown. Yarns in most of these types and also blends using alpaca or llama will be on display. Bruce will give his presentation of the proper way to skirt your animal, his method of shearing and his trademark technique of "Shear's Sort" using the micron grading system. How the different types of alpaca fiber grades determine the type of mill processing to get the best finished product with the highest yield is included in this seminar. Learn how to decipher any mill's processing prices and approximate finished price per pound before sending to a specific mill. Knitted/crocheted garments will also be on display as marketing examples using today's color trends and drape of fiber per item. Lastly, how to price your mill spun yarn for sale, plus suggestions on where to sell your finished product. Bruce MacLean at HarmonyCottage@bmi.net or Diana Blair at GTTS@montanasky.us
